Sega acquires Angry Birds developer Rovio

The Japanese-based gaming giant Sega purchased Angry Birds producer Rovio for $776 million. The deal, which had been speculated for a while and was finally approved on the end of the day.

In the past, we reported that Japanese gaming giant Sega has begun negotiations to purchase Angry Birds producer Rovio. In fact, in March, Sega declared that they would pay $776 million as part of the deal. In the end, the much-anticipated purchase was concluded on the day of its finalization.

For those who aren’t aware, Angry Birds, produced by Rovio was the first game on mobile that surpassed the 1 billionth download. It was so popular the app, that had 200 million monthly users in the first quarter of 2014, debuted as an tv series and two feature films as its ongoing series. The game remains among the most popular mobile games.

In a statement regarding the topic, Sega said, “We aim to leverage Rovio’s distinctive know-how in the live service mobile game operation to bring Sega’s existing and new games to the global mobile game market.” In light of this statement, we can conclude that Sega will Japanese company will increase its game selection in the mobile game market.

Niketim Sega has ambitious mobile games, such as Sonic as well as Football Manager Mobile today. It’s not clear at present if Rovio continues to create Angry Birds games. However we could also observe Sega developing new franchises. But, we’ll have to wait a while to know more.
