Intel is years after Intel with L4 cache
Intel is working on its next-generation processors called Meteor Lake and is planning to release. A new patent, dubbed Adamantine is confirming that the L4 cache.
For some time, new information on Intel Meteor Lake processors has been floating around. Recently, the reports of strong rumors that the next generation processors will be equipped with a Level 4 or L4 cache, were revealed. In a patent filed from Intel this L4 cache is described as Adamantine.
L4 cache is coming several years later
The L4 cache that is present in the Intel Broadwell platform will be among the fundamental building blocks for the new range. The patent states that the next generation SoC architecture is also referred to as Meteor Lake will include “overpack caches”. Meteor Lake will adopt hybrid architecture that consists of five tiles including CPU, SoC I/O, GPU and the base tile. Adamantine cache will provide more speedy access than conventional cache, such as L3, that is a part of CPU tiles. According to Intel the primary purpose for the L4 cache is to enhance boot optimization.
Speedier boot times can be attained
Usually, caches help improve capacity of the memory subsystem by rapidly providing the cores with needed information. However, big caches can contain a huge amount of data, and there are other reasons to use them. The patent indicates the Intel’s Adamantine (or ADM) cache will improve communication between memory and CPU as well as among the CPU as well as security controller. For instance, L4 can be used to protect cached data for resets, thereby improving loading times. Windows 10 and Windows 11 load times are quite quick on Intel’s platforms in the present. But, Intel believes that with memory that can be reset speed, more efficient and faster BIOS-based solutions can be created to support modern devices for mobility such as car infotainment systems as well as home robots.
Although the patent does not contain any mention of Meteor Lake in any way, photos that are included in the patent depict a processor that has the two top-performing Redwood Cove and eight energy-efficient Crestmont cores within an Intel 4 tile. This patent shows clearly the graphics chip and an SoC tile that contains two additional Crestmont cores, as well as an I/O chipset that are connected with Intel’s Foveros 3D technology.
