Sega buys Angry Birds developer Rovio for $776 million

The Japanese-based game giant Sega announced that it had purchased Angry Birds producer Rovio for $776 million. The agreement will be completed at late September. Here are the specifics

You may recall that we announced that Japanese gaming giant Sega is in talks to acquire Angry Birds producer Rovio. In this regard it was announced that Sega had Japanese firm has set aside an amount of around 1 billion dollars to Rovio. Today, the anticipated announcement was made. Sega will pay $776 million to buy Rovio.

It will be completed in the third quarter of 2023.

For those who aren’t aware, Angry Birds, produced by Rovio was the first game on mobile to surpass one billion downloaded. It was so popular it had 200 million monthly gamers at the start of 2014, debuted as an tv series and two feature films as the series’ continuation. It remains among the most popular mobile games.

In a statement regarding the matter, Sega said, “We aim to leverage Rovio’s distinctive know-how in the live service mobile game operation to bring Sega’s existing and new games to the global mobile game market.” On this basis, it is possible to predict that Sega’s Japanese company will increase the range of games it offers on the mobile market.

As per the stock that are listed, the acquisition is expected to close during the 3rd quarter of fiscal year, i.e before the end of September. It should be noted that Sega wasn’t the only company to seek to acquire Rovio. The studio held talks with Israeli-based Playtika in the past, did not come up with any results.
